Charles Ryrie was the editor of the famed Ryrie Study Bible. During his lifetime he amassed a large collection of antiquarian Bibles, which sold at auction after his death for over $7.3 million. This set from his library includes three volumes which comprise the complete Bible, its first authorized Catholic translation into English. The Douay (or Doway) Bible is named for the English College established in the city of Douay across the Channel from England where Penal Laws against Catholics had been established by Elizabeth I. Priests had to go to Douay for training then sneak back into England where they had to say Mass in secret. If caught, they were subject to brutal execution. Description of the set follows: Three volumes uniformly bound in full blind tooled leather with spines in six panels offset by raised bands and gilt labels. OT, Vol. I: light mottling in first 4 quires; Vol. II: fore-edge repairs to A3 4, Rrr4 creased and so printed, small rust hole on Yyy slightly affecting text, light paper discoloration and marginal damp staining in latter half of text (quires Nnnnn Wwwwww), lacks final blank. Each OT volume is 211mm. NT: Title-page and bottom of quire Eeeee remargined several neat corner and fore-edge repairs, minor, occasional damp staining. NT volume is 234 mm. All three volumes have good margins with no shaved headlines. PROVENANCE: Originally smuggled into England; Blount (prominent Catholic Recusant family); Stonyhurst College; Gilt stamped Ryrie bookplates; featured at the Formatting the Word of God exhibit at SMU in 1998-1999. The title page to Vol. I of the Old Testament is now featured on-line on the Internet Bible Catalog. Overall a beautiful and important set of this historical Catholic artifact.
